At the end of September, Dr. Elysia Versen, Acting Executive Director/COO for the Colorado Lab, joined 60 state leaders at the Evidence Builders Convening in Beaver Creek. The convening was hosted by the Colorado Equitable Economic Mobility Initiative (CEEMI), bringing together state executive agency leaders, legislators, Joint Budget Committee analysts, and philanthropy leaders. During the two-day convening, participants considered how Colorado has used evidence to strengthen policy, what has been learned about Evidence-Based Decision Making (EBDM), and what’s needed to continue to grow an EBDM culture.

Dr. Versen facilitated a session with CEEMI staff Jess Corvinus and Dave Anderson, both Senior Programs and Evidence Advisors, on how to make evidence work in practice. The panel introduced Colorado’s Steps to Building Evidence, a process that matches the evidence-building approach to project and decision-making goals. The Colorado Lab serves as the statewide Coordinating Entity for EBDM in Colorado state government. In this role, the Colorado Lab promotes the culture, structure, and capacity for state leaders to use EBDM to drive smart state investments, continuous quality improvement, innovation, and outcomes.

“A big thanks to CEEMI’s leadership for creating a space where we could dig deeply into the why and how of strengthening Colorado’s commitment to building evidence-based decision making,” Dr. Versen said. “It was especially valuable to hear diverse perspectives and a shared appreciation for EBDM as participants considered how to build and apply evidence to two critical issues—workforce development and affordable housing policy.”
