What a treat it was to facilitate a Data Story Walk at the 10th annual conference of the Office of Respondent Parents’ Counsel (ORPC)! The Colorado Lab’s Dr. Elysia Versen, Acting Executive Director/COO and Dr. Courtney Everson, Senior Project Director, guided conference attendees in exploring data on the continuum of parent representation with a special focus on the interdisciplinary team (IDT) model of legal representation.

The IDT model pairs an attorney with a social worker or a parent advocate. Parent advocates have personally navigated the child welfare system successfully. Drawing on their unique strengths, they work as a cohesive team of parent defenders to combat root causes of child welfare involvement and build long-term supports that strengthen the family.

Research shows that a variety of social and legal factors make child welfare cases more complex and act as barriers to families staying together with long-term stability. Complex cases require comprehensive, practical support to achieve positive outcomes. The IDT approach effectively meets this need.

As detailed in the Colorado Lab report, Building Evidence for the Interdisciplinary Model of Legal Representation: Methods and Findings Behind the Story Walk, findings show IDT teams are closing the gap for Colorado parents with complex case needs. As an example, for parents receiving interdisciplinary representation, 84.2% of children were never removed from the home or if removed, were placed with kin. Since 2016, the ORPC has represented 18,198 families, with 16,921 parents being reunified with their children.

“Just like a tour guide walks you through an art exhibit, pointing out the most important pieces and giving context to what you’re seeing, a Story Walk guides people through data—illuminating insights and telling the bigger story behind the numbers,” Dr. Everson said. “It was great to see the emotional power and increased understanding of the value of the interdisciplinary representation model for participants across the judicial, legal, and social work arenas.”

The Story Walk panels are portable with the goal of displaying the exhibit in partner settings dedicated to families involved in child welfare.
